Getting to Know Jamie: Jazz Star from the UK

Who’s Jamie Cullum the jazz star from the UK? Born on August 20, 1979, in Rochford, England. Quite the cool cat, if you ask me.

Jamie dropped his first album, “Jamie Cullum Trio – Heard It All Before,” back in ’99. It moved 500 copies, and get this – an original copy once fetched £600 on eBay. Then he jumped on Geoff Gascoyne’s “Song of the Summer.”

Post-University Moves

After cruising through the University of Reading, Jamie rolled out “Pointless Nostalgic.” It was a hit. TV came knocking, and Universal Music threw £1,000,000 his way for three albums. His debut Verve album, “Twentysomething,” went global – two million copies sold, Grammy nods, and he got crowned the UK’s jazz king in 2003.

Breaking Down “Catching Tales”

So, “Catching Tales,” a collection of 14 tracks of pure Jamie. It kicks off with “Get Your Way,” featuring hip-hop maestro Dan the Automator. Piano, brass, and funky vibes – classic Jamie. Born in Essex, raised in Wiltshire, this guy’s been vibing to everything since forever.

A Tapestry of Influences

Growing up, Jamie was into rock, hip-hop, acid jazz, and blues. Jazz found him through legends like Herbie Hancock and Miles Davis, and he’s also into game-changing albums like Steely Dan’s. Live shows? Wildly spontaneous, often stretching past two hours.
